One of the things that makes One Piece truly special is its amazing cast of side characters. Whether they’re important to the plot or just there for flavor, they all add to the exciting and vibrant world of the show. With that in mind, we’re bringing you One Piece trivia that’s all about the minor characters.

Here’s something you might not have known. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has expressed a desire to play Dr. Kureha in a live-action version of One Piece. Another interesting detail – Oda originally intended to have Basil Hawkins become a Warlord. There’s more where that came from!

  • Lucky Roux Is The First Person In The Series Who Takes A Life

One Piece can get pretty violent at times, and it’s not at all uncommon for characters to take each other’s lives. The character who set that expectation might not be who you thought it would be. It’s Lucky Roux, an officer and combatant in the Red Hair Pirates.

Lucky Roux is the first person seen ending someone else’s life in both the anime and the manga. This happens when he shoots a mountain bandit in the head.

  • Yosaku Appears In A French Elementary School Textbook

A science textbook for French grade schoolers is one of the last places one would expect to see a One Piece character, but Yosaku appears in one alongside Luffy and Usopp.

In the image, Yosaku is suffering from scurvy, while Luffy and Usopp are attempting to cure him by pouring citrus juice down his throat. This is intended to help teach children about scurvy and how it’s treated.

  • Bell-mère Was Likely A High-Ranking Marine

Because she spent her youth as a troublemaker, most people in Bell-mère’s life were shocked by her decision to join the Marines. They certainly didn’t think she’d be successful. While she ultimately decided to focus on raising her daughters instead of advancing in the Marines, she clearly had some serious potential. We know this not just because she’s a badass, but because her uniform is one given to those who are at least Captains – the sixth most powerful rank in the Marines.

  • Real Classical Music Played While Dr. Hiriluk Passed Away

The tragic scene where Dr. Hiriluk passed away was made even more emotional by the presence of classical music. The song playing during this scene was Franz Schubert’s Ellens Gesang III, which is often referred to as “Ave Maria”.

  • Why Did Zeff Eat His Right Leg Instead Of His Left?

One of the most alarming moments in the manga is when Zeff eats his own right leg in order to avoid starvation. But why would he eat his right leg when his right leg is the one with all the kicking power? Oda has an explanation:

“The base of your kick strength is actually the ‘pivoting leg’. For instance, if you were to try to kick a ball with your right leg, what would happen if you didn’t have a left leg? You couldn’t kick it, right? Why don’t you go ask your soccer-playing friends? The life of the kick is contained in the leg that supports your weight!!”

  • Smoker & Tashigi Have Appeared More Often Than Any Other Minor Characters

Most minor characters are confined to an arc or two, but Smoker and Tashigi pop up throughout the series, making at least minor appearances in every arc excluding the Sky Island, Thriller Bark and Four Emperors Sagas. Their presence provides a much appreciated sense of continuity.

  • Jamie Lee Curtis Wants To Play Dr. Kureha

During the 2022 Academy Awards, actress Jamie Lee Curtis stated that she would like to play Dr. Kureha in any future live-action One Piece projects. She said:

“You know there’s that wizened old crone lady…maybe I can be Kureha,” she said. “My [daughter] Ruby said that that would be what I would play.”

Curtis also stated that she’d like to play Nico Robin, but felt that she was a bit too old for the role.

  • Reiju Vinsmoke Was Once Thought To Have A Devil Fruit

Before the full details about Sanji’s sister Reiju were revealed, she was included in a list of unknown Devil Fruit users in One Piece Magazine Vol.1. This was later proven false when the Vivre Card – One Piece Visual Dictionary revealed that her poison powers were genetic enhancements, not the result of a Devil Fruit.

  • Tama Lied About Her Age To Impress Ace

When Ace first arrived at Tama’s village, she begged to join his pirate crew. Knowing that he wouldn’t let her come because of her young age, she claimed to be five when she was four. Only a kid that young would think being five made a huge difference!

  • Oda’s Favorite Character Is Gaimon

You might expect Oda’s favorite character to be his protagonist, or at least a major character like Zoro or Nami. But his favorite is actually a minor character named Gaimon, a former pirate who retired to an island of strange animals. In a joint interview with Akira Toriyama, he said:

“Of course, I like Luffy. But, the character that I like the most is Gaimon. It’s hard to think of anyone better than him. Just a man who has been stuck in a treasure box for 20 years. I think that was an amazing setup myself.”
