Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae star in The Acolyte a series set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It is set in the High Republic era of Star Wars, something that has yet to be explored in live action. The High Republic was introduced in a complete interconnected book series a few years ago and has since been explored in short films and the Young Jedi Adventures pre-school series. In the series, Stenberg plays a former padawan who teams up with a Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) to investigate a series of murders and perhaps something even more sinister.
The series comes from Leslye Headland, co-creator of Netflix’s Russian Doll, and clearly has a darker take on the classic Star Wars stories, especially compared to the brighter and happier The Mandalorian. Also, the cast includes Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett and Carrie-Anne Moss. Still Michael Abels, the musician behind Nope, will compose the music for the series.
The first footage from the eight-episode series, which will be directed by Headland, Alex Garcia Lopez and Kogonada, premiered at Star Wars Celebration in London last year. The footage elicited a pretty strong positive reaction, both for the tone and story of the new series.
The Acolyte is coming to Disney+ on June 4.
