There are many cases in various anime and franchises where characters don’t receive the proper character development they deserve. One such case in Pokémon is Zinnia. And truly, we don’t know the reason, as she has the potential to become one of the most iconic characters in the franchise. It’s not coincidental that she has one of the most intriguing descriptions in terms of information out there. For example, it is said that she is friends with May and Brendan, with the latter being widely beloved in the Pokémon community.

To start from the beginning, Zinnia is from an ancient tribe known as the Draconids, who reside in the Hoenn Region. We first encountered her in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire games. This tribe essentially consists of trainers who specialize in Dragon-type Pokémon and live in Meteor Falls.

The location where they lived is significant because meteorites had fallen in that area, flooding many regions. The Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre were battling there, and Rayquaza intervened to stop them. A thousand years later, the city of Sootopolis became the next victim of the disasters, with Groudon and Kyogre returning. This time, Rayquaza took on a Mega form to be able to halt the new catastrophe.

Following these events, the Draconid tribe constructed the well-known Sky Pillar, adorned with murals depicting the themes of their tribe. The Sky Pillar was built with the purpose of summoning Rayquaza once again, as it had been foretold that after 1,000 years of peace, a new meteorite would strike the world of Pokémon.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga series, the Dragonic tribe makes their appearance in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire chapter. As usual, they live with Dragon-type Pokémon, and we have various members, including Aster, Jinga, Renza, Tomatoma, and Elder. Unlike the games, they reside beneath Meteor Falls, in the area known as Meteor Village, which is guided by the tribe’s Elder.

Now the future of the Draconid tribe lies with Zinnia, a young member who possesses a powerful Salamence, including its Mega form, Mega Salamence, achieved through the use of the Mega Anklet. She always has a Whismur named Aster as her companion on her journey. She is the only character in the games with the Trainer Class of Lorekeeper!

Depending on the version of the game we have, her role changes. Specifically, in Omega Ruby, she is a member of Team Magma, while in Alpha Sapphire, she is a member of Team Aqua.

The Delta Episode may be one of the best after-ending stories in Pokémon games. From the involvement of Rayquaza and the meteor, which is essentially the powerful Deoxys, to Zinnia deciding to join either Team Magma or Team Aqua, ultimately losing the meaning of her life as depicted in the end of the episode.

With her grandmother revealing to Steven the actions of the young Dragon Type trainer and how all of this is a risk between the lives of humans and Pokémon.

Our duty now is to stop the all-powerful Rayquaza and essentially persuade Zinnia to change her plans and see things more clearly. As soon as the player completes the Delta Episode, Aster thanks the player, and her grandmother in Meteor Falls advises Zinnia to find her own purpose in life and to free herself from the duties of the tribe. Essentially, it is the last time we see the character as she leaves with her Salamence, and her whereabouts remain unknown until today.

And it’s truly a shame in this whole story they have built. A highly interesting personality, well-developed through the story of ORAS, and now without any trace of existence. Hopefully, we will see her in a future game or movie. Personally, I don’t want to see her at all in the anime since Zinnia deserves a darker scenario, not something as light as the current anime.

For the sake of the story alone, she has made an appearance in Pokémon Masters, although we shouldn’t take it too seriously.
